‌‌‌‌‌How do I read my electricity meter?

There are number of types of electricity meter. Follow our electricity meter guide below to give a correct meter reading. If your meter has stopped or you’re having other problems reading it, call us on 0800 121 6699.

Single-rate meter (electricity)

Write down the five numbers shown from left to right, ignoring the last number or numbers, which may be shown in red. Here the meter reading is 68125, the red number should be ignored.

Two-rate meter (electricity)

For top and bottom rows, write down the numbers shown left to right. Ignore the last number or numbers, which may be shown in red. You need o give the two readings 59726 and 72695.

Two-rate single display meter (electricity)

Some two-rate meters only have one digital display. They’ll either alternate between the two readings or you’ll need to press the button to make the display cycle through the readings for each rate. You need to give the two readings 65884 and 56700.

Dial meter (electricity)

Read the first five dials from left to right, ignoring the dial marked 1/10. Checking which way each dial turns, write down the number that the pointer has just passed, which will be the lower of the two numbers either side of the pointer. The meter reading here is 72068.

‌‌How do I read my gas meter?

Like electricity meters, there are number of types of gas meter. Follow our gas meter guide below to give a correct meter reading. Remeber that if your meter has stopped or you’re having other problems reading it, you should call us on 0800 121 6699.

Digital meters (gas)

Write down the five numbers shown from left to right, ignoring the numbers after the decimal point (these may be shown in red). The meter reading here is 67554.

Imperial meters (gas)

Write down the four numbers shown from left to right, ignoring the numbers in red. The meter reading here is 2539.

Dial meters (gas)

Read the four dials from left to right along the bottom row only. Write down the number closest to each pointer. If the pointer is between two numbers, write down the lower number. But if it’s between 9 and 0, write down 9. Remember each dial turns in the opposite direction to the one before it, so check which way each turns. The meter reading here is 6928.
